How Magicians Create A Winning Atmosphere For Magic

By Ken Ryan on January 24, 2019 0

Ideally, magic should be about art and showmanship, not about “winning” against the audience in an adversarial contest. Don’t “challenge” your audience with confrontational language during tricks, and don’t present the audience with the the attitude that you are better than they are or don’t respect them. You can have challenging tricks, but the tone of the challenge should be friendly and playful, not adversarial. Finally try to not remind your audience that your trick is even a trick in the first place — you might want to try telling a story instead.

Key Takeaways:

  • Magicians should make sure magic isn’t an “I win, you lose” situation but it should be a win-win situation.
  • The first step to a win-win atmosphere in magic is for magicians not to use “challenge” vocabulary in their acts.
  • The challenge atmosphere doesn’t bode well for magicians because when they believe he is fooling them, they become unhappy with him.

“When you are performing magic, the last thing you want is for the audience to believe they’re in some kind of conflict with you.”

How To Create Magicians Patter – What To Say When Performing A Magic Trick

By Ken Ryan on October 25, 2018 0

Some people love magic so much. The magicians that go a lot of the work that magic involves are people who have been around it for many years. They live and breed for new magic tricks and they try everything in their power to master some of the coolest tricks. When you are performing a trick, your duty is to make the audience wonder how the hell you did something. That is the sign of a good magician.

Key Takeaways:

  • The bottom line is that the people who do magic train for many, many years before being ready.
  • Not everyone will be able to grasp the idea of magic when they try to learn how to do it.
  • There are a bunch of different patterns that allow these people to remember how to do certain tricks.

“Watch lots of stand up comedians and see how they present their act in a way that almost looks like they are coming up with the jokes on the spot. They even stop and laugh with the audience as it’s new to them too. It’s not. They have rehearsed their act to be like that. You can do the same when you create magicians patter for each effect you do.”
